As of July 1st, 2024, there were 333,803 people aged 65 and over in Málaga, with 71,253 of them being foreign-born. This accounts for 21.43% of the elderly population, according to Spain’s national institute of statistics (INE).
Málaga ranks second in Spain for its percentage of foreign retirees, just behind Alicante. In Alicante, nearly 25% of the population over 65 is foreign-born. This contrasts sharply with the national average. Across Spain, only 8% of the 10 million residents over 65 were born outside the country.
Other Andalucian coastal provinces, like Granada and Cádiz, are less attractive to foreign retirees. In Granada, only 5.9% of retirees are foreign-born, and in Cádiz, the figure is just 4.3%.
Where do the foreign retirees hail from?
Foreign retirees in Málaga come from a diverse range of countries. Most are from European nations outside the EU, making up 36.5% of the foreign-born elderly population. EU citizens follow at 30.65%.
Nearly 14% were born in Africa, and 13% in South America. When including those from Central America, the Caribbean, and North America, 15.5% of the retirees in Málaga come from the American continent. The remaining 3.5% are from Asia and Oceania.
